Civic Centre Park, California

As we were driving around yesterday, familiarising ourselves with the area, we came across Civic Centre Park.  It is not somewhere we have been before, so we thought we would have a stroll around it today…it was really nice. We have since learned that it is the largest of Palm Deserts parks.

Our last stop at the park was the Desert Holocaust Memorial which we both found really interesting.035 Desert Holocaust Memorial

Las Vegas – November 2014

Heading down to Palm Springs for our winter break, we had to make the obligatory stop off in Vegas.

Last year we saw this wheel being built.  It is very odd seeing something so similar to the London Eye in the middle of Vegas.  However, at more than 100 ft taller than the London Eye, this is currently the worlds tallest ferris wheel.  001 1125 High Roller Vegas

This year though it was up and running so we decided to take a trip on it.  The pictures aren’t great due to the reflections, but you get the idea!016 1125 High roller tickets

Snow in September

A snow storm stared to roll in on Monday 8th September, which I think is the earliest we have ever known snow.  We only have to see snow during the month of June, July and August to say we have seen snow every month! We feel sure it is only a matter of time before this will happen.  The snow is wet and heavy and is causing problems with power lines (many areas have lost power) and also tree branches falling onto roads and highways.

Here’s hoping it doesn’t last long and the nice sunshine and high temperatures predicted for early next week will get rid of it for a good few weeks yet!

Hail Storm

We had the most incredible hail storm in Okotoks today.  We think it is definitely the biggest hail we have ever seen and it has done a lot of damage in the area especially to windows, roofs, cars etc.

We don’t think I captured some of the biggest pieces that fell, but you get the idea!

Flood Damage in Kananaskis

Today we decided to take a trip to Kananaskis Village.  What we weren’t really prepared for was the amount flood damage.  We saw a lot of devastation along the rivers and piles of debris but the washed out bridge/road was an incredible reminder of the strength and force of the water that flowed through Southern Alberta over 1 year ago!

Fiddleheads are back in supermarkets here in Canada. We always have to stare at them in wonder, but we haven’t yet got round to trying them!!!

As we understand it, fiddleheads need to be washed well and then you cook them like asparagus although they do need to be cooked thoroughly as undercooked fiddleheads may cause an upset stomach.

Another reason we never get round to it is because the season is incredibly short.  Perhaps next year!

The British Chippy Comes To Okotoks

You may remember that some years back we posted about the British Chippy in Bridlewood.  Well great news, we have just learned that they are opening a second location in Okotoks in July 2014.  This is most pleasing and I am sure they will do a booming trade.

Here’s hoping they have enough food for their opening night as we think they could cause a stampede!

The new location will be at 94 Elizabeth Street, Okotoks and more information on the British Chippy can be found at:

Happy days.

Gilbert, AZ

Gilbert is a small town, with what looks like a historic High Street.  To be honest there isn’t that much here, but it looks as though there are plans to grow the town considerably and they seem to be building a new university campus as well as a number of new restaurants and shops.  We like to have a stroll around in the sunshine though and it entertained us for a while.
